Lota and the Jug

>> Friday, July 15, 2005

I remember having this discussion about the jug and the lota in the second year of my architectural education during a design workshop. Each with its distinct form essentially highlights its unique design process and the underlying thought.

Consider the Jug, a product of the industrial revolution, the machine age. The mediocre result of a mechanical unthinking process, of a unidirectional thought:

The need-to hold water, the product- a cylinder which makes a stable sturdy container. But whats the use if you cant hold it right..?, the addition, a handle on one side. Then someone realised that one needs to channelize the water to not let it spill. Thus a final alteration to the design- 'the beak.'.Ah! here I have a product which perfectly solves all my needs .

Compare it with the Lota, which has existed for centuries.

The lota is a product of man's creativity, made by his own hands(the stainless steel one is just a replica of the original lota, made on the wheel). One perfect form which solves all the purpse. No unnecesaary additions sticking out- Smooth curves, beginning gently at the bottom and culminating in a widened rim. This rim at the top allows you to hold it with a proper grip ,allows easy pouring and at the same time beautifully articulates the overall form.
Both the lota and the jug serve the same purpose of holding and serving water. Then where lies the difference?

Hands and machine..?
Clay and stainless steel..?
Thinking and Unthinking?
Regional and universal?
Art and technology?

Indian and western thought?

Yellow Submarine

>> Wednesday, July 13, 2005

Had a talk few days back with a friend about the relevance of lyrics of 'Yellow Submarine'
Quickly googled to find out more.
Beatles always claimed that Yellow Submarine was a childrens song. However In a search for the 'deeper meaning' behind the song, fans and critics tried to derive all kinds of cultural and symbolic interpretations of the song. Many consider it having to do with drugs and war. Some environmentally minded groups and peace organizations, also used this 60's song as an anthem against the Vietnam War.
That is that. But here is what Paul Mccartney, the creator of the song had to say about the yellow submarine:
It's a happy place, that's all!
wow!Beatles were such a phenomenon, that at times people read a bit too much into their songs.

Walk of Life

Just cant seem to get over this song. This is the fifth time since morning, that am listening to it.

"And after all the violence and double talk,
There’s just a song in the trouble and the strife,
You do the walk, you do the walk of life.."
- Dire Straits

River Sutra

>> Friday, July 08, 2005

Geeta Mehta in her book River sutra captures the Narmada as a breathtakingly beautiful river, most feminine in her movements as she rises in Amarkantak and slithers through the thick jungles and deep gorges in the Vindhyas. The book weaves a set of stories around the myths, folklore and legends associated with the river and reflects the very many cultures, religions and traditions that continue living in the Indian subcontinent. The enchanting tales of love and desire vividly depict life along the banks of the holy river.

Amidst all the political tension that surrounds the river, the everyday stories about the anti-dam activists and the government; it was more than a pleasure to read a very different perspective of Narmada. Of Narmada the river. Narmada a living entity,Narmada a mystery.

Was a delightful read.
